THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.
NOTES FROM ALL PARTS
It was stated at the annual meeting of the Levin Dairy Company that the cost of manufacturing butter last season tvs 1 1.61 d per lb, or a little over l|d. Marketing charges totalled 2.95 d, or a shade under 3d per lb. Home separtion i 4 evidently carried on. to a considerable extent among dairymen in the Levin district. Mr S. A. Broadbelt, chairman of the Levin Dairy Company, stated at the annual, meeting last week that onethird of the company's out-put of butter was manufactured from home-sep-arated cream. \
It is well known that cows are rather fond of chewing bones; and often get one stuck in their throat ' (says the Eltham Argus).' Mr John Campbell, of Rawhitiroa Road, found one of his cows suffering the other day, and- correctly diagnosed the cause. After some difficulty he extracted the bone, which was tightly wedged. It was a large piece of one of the vertebrae of a cow which he extracted, and it was rather remarkable that the animal had made an attempt at so large a swallow. Some writers say that it is the salty flavour that induces cows to chew bones 1 , ana where lumps of rock salt are lying about the fields: they are not so prone to the practice.
