MASTERFUL MEN.
SOME OBSERVATIONS
There is no character in fiction more popular than the strong, masterful lover, but in a'ctual life he is a most unsatisfactory kind of a person. It is a common supposition that a woman likes being mastered. Perhaps she does —to a certain extent. But the domineering sort of man very rarely knows how to strike the happy medium; he is nearly always a “ whole hogger ” (writes Warwick Stanford in the Daily Mail). A woman will respect a man for being firm and inflexible when occasion demands, but living under constant despotism is a very different matter. The masterful man allows no latitude to a wife or a sweetheart. He says, “ You must do as I say,” and it has to be done.
IHe is a stranger to sweet reasonableness; bis word is law. The keynote of his character is discipline. Discipline is a very fine thing, but where there is any question of it between man and wife that marriage is usually unhappy. Complete sympathy and understanding will do away with the necessity of a “master” in the home.
For husband or lover there is no one to beat the good-natured, easygoing, tolerant man.
