ENGINEER’S REPORT

The following report was s'ubmited by the engineer (Mr E. R. Gould) at the meeting of the Council held yesterday at Otorohanga : Wharepapa Riding.

Rennie Bros, are getting on well with their metalling contract on the Otorohanga-KihiKihi road and should finish within the next two or three weeks. When this contract is completed there will be an unmetalled gap of about two miles, which may be further reduced very shortly. Repair work has been carried out on various roads in the Ngaroma district which are now generally speaking in very ■fair order. I met some of the Ngahape settlers and arranged to make a temporary side track on a portion of the Mangaorongo to Kawa road complained of, until conditions are favourable for metalling. Te Rau-a-Moa Riding. Necessary maintenance and repair work has been carried out in this riding, more particularly on theKaw-hia-Pirongia road. Mangaoronga Riding. Small maintenance and repair works where necessary, were carried out in this riding. The roads, are in very fair order throughout. I submitted proposals for a short piece of metalling on the Paewhenua Road, but no authority from the Public Works Department has yet been received. Waipa Riding. I have prepared plans and specifications for a bridge over the Mangawhero stream on the Tahaia Soldiers’ Settlement Road, and will proceed with the erection of the bridge as soon as authority from the Public Works Department is given. Repair work has been carried out on the Puketawa, Tahaia, and Te Kuiti roads. Honikhvi Riding.

The widening on the Aamaru road is now practically completed. About 14 c yds. of metal was carted out for repairs to the Otorohanga-Pirongia road.

I inspected the Waitomo • Valley Road and notice that the portion which was to be kept in repair by the Saw Milling Company is in bad order. In this connection I have notified the company that repairs must be effected immediately and! the agreement made with the Council strictly adhered to. Metal Reserves.

Notice boards warning persons against taking shingle from the Council’s Reserves without written authority have been placed on all reserves. Estimates.

I had a conference with the District Engineer of the Public Works Department at Auckland in connection with the current year’s estimates but the .amount allocated for this County will provide very little new money for the Council’* proposed undertakings.
