The Waipa Post. Published on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1922. THE ELECTRICAL SCHEME.

WITH the advent of spring and the opening of another dairying season the farmers of the Te Awamutu district find themselves exceptionally placed in the matter of 'cheap power. With the near approach of the completion of the scheme electric power and lighting are now. available practically throughout the length and breadth of the area under the Board’s jurisdiction. There is no need at this juncture to stress the many advantages to be derived from connecting with the system, hut it is advisable that farmers and others should ibe impressed with the necessity of putting in their installations at an early a date as possible. This. is desirable not only on account of the greater utility of the service provided, but to enable full advantage to be taken of the scheme. The Board wisely desires to extend the scope of its activities as much as possible, and by increasing the number of consumers this end will be brought nearer to consummation. This in turn would mean increased revenue to the Board, which naturally desires to get its business on a normal working basis as speedily as possible. People can assist in that direction -by immediately connecting. The point is important, too, because the greater the revenue the less likelihood will there be of collecting a rate, for which all ratepayers are liable, and the imposition of which none desires to see. By acting on our suggestion farmers and others will not only be securing an excellent service, but will also be providing the Board with an assured finance.

WAR MEMORIAL SITE. ALTHOUGH .the site for the local war memorial was by general agreement fixed .in front of the Power Board’s office at the junction of Bank 'Street and Teasfiale Street, there was also a feeling that something definite would have .to be done in regard .to the building itself. The idea of erecting a magnificent monument with a background so out of harmony with the theme seemed utterly incongruous. The dif-

Acuity, however, has .been surmounted in an- eminently practicable and desirable manner. -A survey revealed the fact that in any case a considerable portion of the building would have to be removed to make room for .the monument, and as the cost of this work would be approximately £loo—a sum equal to nearly a year’s revenue from .the building—the Borough Council last night wisely decided to terminate the Power Board’s tenancy, so .that the structure can be removed and the entire site made available for the war memorial. This decision goes further than the Memorial Committee desired, but can be justified upon, the ground that the .building cut about and altered would have become a. greater eyesore than ever by reason of the erection of the monument in front of it. Now the committee will not be cramped for room. It will be possible to set the monument on a spacious section and so to plan the approaches to it—either by the making of pathways, gardens, or lawns — that they will enhance the beauty and appearance of our symbol of remembrance of those gallant gentlemen whose memory it is proposed to worthily perpetuate.
