PRODUCING WINTER MILK.
BOW VICTORIAN FARMERS DO IT. Two dairy farmers started to feed their cows with concentrates and lucerne chaff, being quite unaware that regular feeding with nutritious fodders in the bails had such an important bearing on milk production. "We never thought it was possible to keep the cows up to such a high standard of production by feeding them until we tried the matter for ourselves," said one of the brothers. " We have since found that generous feeding pays." The system followed on the farm is to keep on increasing the allowance of bran by half a pound a day while the cow continues to respond. Special crops, including lucerne, are grown for the cows, and the pastures are rich and healthy. The lucerne is fed green in the bails in the 1 summer, and chaffed for winter feed. Taken on the average, the day's ration for the cows at the present >time consists of 14 lbs of oaten sheaf, 7 lbs of lucerne chaff, 4 lbs of crushed oats, 4 lbs of crushed barley, and from 4 to 6 lbs of hran. The oaten chaff is damped with hot water, and allowed to stand about 12 hours. The concentrates are mixed together,.. and are placed in the feed box with the oaten chaff at milking times.
