ARBUCKLE SENTENCED.
“ NOT A REDEEMING FEATURE.”
(By Telegraph.—'Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. John lArbuckle, convicted of embezzlement of the Miners’ Federation funds, was sentenced by Mr Justice Reed to a period not exceeding four years reformative treatment. Asked if he had anything to say before sentence was passed upon him, accused made a long address to the Court, stressing as the main reasons for a light sentence the fact of his insufficient pay during the tlfrfee or four years following his appointment as a union officer, and that his wife and three children in Australia were dependent upon friends for maintenance, as he had nothing to give them, and could give them nothing while in gaol. His Honour said he could see not one redeeming feature in Arbuckle’s case. In appointing him to his position, the miners had had faith in his integrity, yet he had deliberately taken moneys intended for relief of his miner mates and their wives and children, and had applied these moneys to his own purposes.
