BENEFITS FOR SOLDIERS.

CESSATION UNDER NEW ACT. EXTENSION DESIRED. The action of the Governmeit in closing the advances to returned soldiers under the Repatriation Act to come into force on June 20th, was the subject of protest at the annual district conference of the Auckland Provincial Returned Soldiers’ Association on Saturday. The feeling of the meeting, so Mr I. F. McDonald, who attended as representative of the Te Awamutu Returned Soldiers’ Association states, was that the benefits of the Act should be made available for at least another eighteen months after that date. There were many discharged soldiers who had as yet no opportunitiy to avail themselves of them, among these being men in hospital, men too young to launch out in business or establish homes for themselves or deterred from doing so by the present stringent conditions. A resolution was passed suggesting to headquarters that a circular be issued to district associations urging them to bring pressure to bear on their res*pective members of Parliament with a view to having the advances under the Act made available for a further 18 months. The motion also directed the attention of the'Repatriation Board to the promise of the Prime Minister that 12 months’ notice would be given of the cessation of the benefits under the Repatriation Act.
