PORT TO RAILWAY.

HOAD METALLING PROPOSALS. MINISTERIAL ACTION. In a letter addressed to Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P. for Raglan, the Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister for Public Works) writes as follows re the Pirongia-Ka-whia Road:

“The metalling through the Te Rau-a-Moa settlement has, I tinderstand, slightly deteriorated through sufficient funds not being available for fresh metal to be spread each year. . The settlers have not been called upon, up to the present, to contribute towards the cost of maintenance of the road. The County Council recently offered to take over the maintenance of this portion of the road if the Government would contribute' £2OO per annum towards the cost. I have today informed the chairman that I am unable to commit the Government to find £2OO for an indefinite period, but that I 'am prepared to authorise £2OO for the present financial year and for the financial year ending 31st March, 1922, on the understanding that the matter is to be reviewed at the end of that period.” * The petition to the Kawhia County Council praying for a special rating area to be declared between Te Rau-a-Moa and Oparau, so that ratepayers may contribute towards the metalling from Te Rau-a-Moa to Oparau, has been well supported. Three-quarters of the ratepayers interested have signed the petition, and three settlers of the Pirongia West Road have notified the secretary of the Te Rau-a-Moa Farmers’ Union that they are willing to be included. It is understood that the ratepayers of Waitomo are unanimous for the metalling to the Main Trunk line eastward to proceed. Thus a through road from port to railway is assured.
