STARTS FROM TO-DAY.

TE AWAMUTU EN FETE

The carnival has. started. Prom Saturday the flags of the ithree rival candidates will be flown, but the battle royal will have started from to-day in earnest.

Te Awamutu realises that the cause is a good one. The accumulated funds will be devoted to a worthy object—the laying down of a sports ground on the domain. The voting tickets—--3d each—have been issued, and the ballot boxes are open to receive them There will be 'functions amain in the near future.

To-morrow night the returned soldiers are giving a fancy dress ball in aid of their candidate, Miss InnesJones. It is stated that the costumes will be many and varied. On Saturday the supporters of the Sports Queen have arranged a cake stall and Paddy’s market in the afternoon—in fact, the fun will .be on all day—and an impromptu open-air dance in the evening on the macadam road should entice all the “ jazzers ” in the district to turn up and give “ fox-trot-ting ” displays in addition to the more mundane dances. The. green ribbon Queen (Miss Collins) should do well out of the occasion, which is sure to give her many votes. On Saturday week the footballers will make their coup in their monster surprise-packet day, which will occupy the whole day. The prizes will be very valuable. The surprise-packet day to be held in Te Awamutu on 10th instant will be one of the most interesting and amusing features of the carnival. Prom morning till night lorries laden with the prizes will be parading the town, and the gifts will be distributed to the lucky winners. Every envelope will contain a prize. The big prizes—£7oo worth in all—consist, of stock, horses, and other valuable gifts. The proceeds will be for the Football Queen (Mrs J. T. Lees). The colours, are blue and 'black. Prize envelopes may be obtained from the secretary (Mr Eric Baume, care of the WaipaPost) or Messrs J. T. Lees, G. Gifford, and H. Bhrchell.

THE SPORTS QUEEN.

FUNCTIONS FOR THE FUTURE,

A meeting of the committee of the Sports Queen was held in the library room on Tuesday. There were present: Mesdames H. Y. Collins, A. J. Bray, C. F. Battson, T. D. Thomas, E. Potts, R. Lord, E. J. Taylor, and P. W. Peate, Miss Collins, and Messrs H. G. Foster, F. Keen, M. Rogers, H. Lewis, I. Owsley, T. Mclnnes, K. Herbert, J. M. Spear, and S. A. Empson (who presided).

Apologies for noii-attendance were received from Mrs Wm. Taylor, Mrs G. J. Hall, and Messrs H. Semmens, W. McGivern, and T. D. Thomas. Mr and Mrs J. Storey, Mrs H. Hutt, and Mr A. Cruickshank were elected to the committee.

A yote of thanks was accorded Mr. A. E. Patterson for a donation. In order to secure the services of Mr Dalton’s orchestra it was decided to postpone the leap year dance until 16th instant.

• Donations for the puddings, omelette, and cake stall are coming in freely, and the stall pomises to be a great success. In connection with this stall, Mrs H. Y. Collins held a very successful gift afternoon at “ Otawhao ” yesterday. The stall is to be opened on Saturday.
