EMPIRE PICTUKKS. The first, of a great series of cinematograph productions by the famous .Vl-dtro company. "Tlio Heari of a fainted Woman' featuring the talented actress Madam Olga Peltrova, will be screened at the Empire Theatre on Saturday afternoon at 2, and in the evening at 8, and it is to be hoped thai the peopl;; of Te Awamatu will show their appreciation of the enterprise of the management in placing before them the latest and choicest in animated pictures, by attending in large numbers. The story i,s quite off the conventional lines, and illustrates the theory so often- denied that "out of evil good may come." The plot is boldly and skilfully carried out without any apparent effort to gloss over or accentuate what might appear to be somewhat difficult and delicate points. The characters are in the hands of really conscientious artistes, but chief honours rest with Madam Olga. Petrova, who, as the Magdalen of the slory, fully maintains the high reputlou accorded her by American coiltemporaries. She is an arlislle in

every sense of the word. An American writer says, "Olga Petrova is one of the handsomest women on the stage," an opinion that cannot be gainsaid. With a perfect figure, a flexible countenance that conveys every phase of oiiiotion, a style of dressing that cannot be improved upon, and a real dramatic instinct that grasps every turn of the story, it is difficult to imagine a more perfect delineation, and the artiste is in every respect equal to her Itask of carrying the whole responsibility of this remarkable production upon her own shoulders. At the request of several patrons who were disappointed at the nonarrival of the film "The Scarlet Oath," arrangements have been completed to screen it on Tuesday next. Gail Kane plays a dual role in this line play, and her power of painting intense emotion is called upon for tremendous effort in some of the scenes in, this melodrama. The scenes in Warsaw are most wonderful and were taken prior to the German occupation of the unhappy Polish Capital. SKATING. There was a good muster of skating enthusiasts at the Town Hall rink on Wednesday, and again the skating was of a most enjoyable nature. The programme was so arranged as to suit all desires, and a very happy time was spent by one and all. The music, provided by the band, left nothing to be desired, and the management was good throughout. The first of a series of hockey games was played, and was keenly contested by a good number of enthusiasts. The progress of the game witnessed a few spills, and the play was exciting from start to finish. Now that all the skaters have reached a higher standar.d of efficiency, it is intended to include in the regular programmes practice contests of various forms in preparation for the carnivals.
