OHAUPO IMPROVEMENTS.

I With a view to adjusting a few of the details accompanying the severance of the newly-consti-tuted Ohaupo town district- from the Waioa County, a deputation consisting of Messrs G. Bailev, A. Coggins, and E. Edwards, representing the Ohaupo Town Board, waited on the Waipa County Council on Tuesday when the Council was asked to stipulate the width to" which the Board would be permitted to construct footpaths in the main street and also whether the Council would be prepared to raise a special loan of £IOOO for improvements to the central thoroughfare, from the sale yards to the smithy. For this purpose the town district could be created a special rating area. The capital value of the township was at present £58,846, and a 3-l6d rate on this would amount to £46, sufficient to cover the interest and j sinking fund. The township was at present paying a rate of 9-l6d for the main road, which amounted to £l4O a year. It was suggested as an alternative to strik- I ing another rate, that the interest and sinking fund should be paid out of this fund, which would then leave £9O of the revenue unspent. The money would, of course, be spent on the road only, as the footpaths came unclel- the jurisdiction of the Board. Byworking in conjunction the two j bodies could perhaps save each other considerable expense. Mr Bailey stated that it was proposed at the earliest possible moment to fix permanent levels for the town, and to carry out extensive improvements, which I would, of course, increase the valuations.

Cr Steele pointed out that metalling in the Waipa County cost at the rate of £BOO per mile, and he suggested proceeding cautiously. The Council decided, before sanctioning the loan, to require a plan and estimate of the proposed work to be approved by the county engineer. The width of the footpaths was fixed at 10ft.
