QUEEN OF THE CARNIVAL.

SPORTS MEETING. A meeting of the committee representing the combined sports and kindred institutions met at the public library rooms on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance, and Mr H. Worthington occupied the chair. The secretary of the executive (Mr A. E. Patterson) was present and bi ierly outlined the programme of the executive in their carrying out of the carnival. Mr Patterson was thanked for his attendance. A letter was read from the secretary of the Te Awamutu Town Band in regard to its attitude towards the forthcoming carnival It had been intended that the band associate itself with the sports committee, but at a meeting to consider the matter, it was found that it was expressly laid down on the inauguration of the band that they do not ally themselves with any church or section of the community, but remain neutral. At the same time it was resolved to lend any assistance possible, and to assist any committee should their services be requested. —Resolved to thank the band for their offer.

It was decided that the special concessions submitted by the manager of the WAIPA POST in regard to advertising during carnival contest be availed of. The secretary stated the meeting held by the ladies had proved a great success. A large number attended and all were willing to help towards furthering the interests of their candidate. ,He asked for the committee's approval to his action in sanctioning the purchase' of material for making rosettes, which would be sold at is each.—Action approved. Mr Thomas reported that as the result of the canvass made of the business people, the sum of £6 6s 6d had been collected. Trophies had been promised from Messrs G. W. Mairs, J. De Coek, R. B. Brown, T. Spear, G. Gilford, Kendrick and Bray, E. J. Taylor, A. R. Thomas, S. H. Dwen, and Sager (Mangapiko). The following committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements with regard to a football match with the tradesmen :—Messrs Worthington, Cox, Morton and Thomas. It was agreed that a canvass be made of all secretaries and clubs with regard to obtaining gifts or subscriptions. The secretary was instructed to interview Mr Wright to arrange for a magic lantern entertainment to be given at an early date, and that the band be asked to assist. . It was agreed that arrangements be made to hold a mock trial to conclude with a farce, and the following committee was appointed to arrange details : Messrs Stitt, McTavish, Thomas, Cox, Aldridge, and.Dotiglas, with power to add. Mr Owen offered to paint a number of pictures, which could be disposed of and the proceeds devoted to the funds.—His offer was accepted with thanks. THE TRADERS' MEETING. A meeting of ladies was held at Messrs Sutherland Bros.' tea rooms on Wednesday afternoon. About thirty ladies attended, and all werj most enthusiastic in furthering the interests of the traders candidate.

Mrs G. M. Ahier submitted an offer to arrange a dramatic entertainment, to take place on Friday, 30th inst.—The offer was accepted with thanks. After discussion it was decided that the trades committee hand over the Town Hall on September Ist to the promoters of the Flower Show, and that the art union be drawn during the progress of the show. —Mrs Bray suggested that as half of the proceeds of the show are to be for the wounded soldiers' fund, the money could go to swell the amount of the general carnival fund, which was for the same purpose. The chairman (Mr Dwen) gave a brief outline of what had been done by the committee, and there was much discussion regarding various details.

Before the meeting, afternoon tea was generously provided by; Messrs Sutherland Bros., who were accorded a form il, though very hearty,- vote of th inks. The ladies' committee held a meeting immediately at the conclusion of the general meeting. There were present:—Mesdames F. W. Clarke, H. Andrew, J. De Coek, C. Richards, H. Dwen, W. Jefferv, T. C. Simes, A. J. Bray, C. W. Rickit, J. Middlebrook, junr., G. Salter, Sutherland, F. Taylor, H. H. -Hutt, and K. J. Taylor, Misses S. Ahier, Watson, and Floyd. Mrs F. W. Clarke presided, and Miss Watson was elected secretary. It was decided to make a suitable banner to be carried by the

children on the occasion of the children's concert, and which will be auctioned, on behalf of the funds, during the progress of the concert. Consideration was given to the making of distinctive rosettes, and arrangements made to that end. The meeting also considered the advisability of holding a grand juvenile fancy dress entertainment, and arrangements v c«f that end were made. An extraordinary meeting of the committee was also held, Mr . Dwen presiding. The meeting approved the action of the secretary in combining with the secretary of the sports committee in seeking for a reduction of the rental charges for the Town Hall. The special offer,of advertising submitted by the Waipa Post Printing and Publishing Co., Ltd., was accepted. A letter from the general secretary (Mr Patterson) in regard to the conduct of the voting was deferred until the next regular meeting at Messrs Sutherland Bros.' tea rooms on (this) Friday evening.

KIHIKIHI CANDIDATE. (Own Correspondent That the old adage "Competition is the life of trade" is still a truism, was fully demonstrated by the enthusiasm which the competition for the honour of the Queen of the Carnival has infused into the election of the local candidate. The second meeting for the furthering of their objective was held in the supper room of the Town Hall, and the various schemes for the raising of money advanced a stage further. Before commencing the business of the meeting, the chairman (Mr McCardle) expressed his deep sympathy with the Verner family, and called for a vote of condolence with them in their recent sad bereavement. The motion was received in silence, the members standing. The proffered services of the le Awamutu Band were very gladly accepted and the bandsmen thanked for their generous offer to further the interests of the cause, irrespective of party. With a view to increasing the chances of victory in the contest, arrangements were considered for the organisation of the entire district. A sub-committee was appointed to arrange for weekly entertainment in the Town Hall. During the evening several generous donations were announced, and the donors thanked. This, with the usual votes or" thanks to the chairman and secretary, concluded the meeting. OHAUPO WITHDRAWS. On Tuesday a meeting /of the Ohaupo committee was held to consider the nomination of the candidate from that district. It seems that the nomination when made imposed a restriction in regard to the manner of making disbursements when the carnival was concluded. The executive refused to countenance these restrictions and declined to vary the conditions as had ,been laid down and accepted by the other districts. The acceptance of the nomination was consequently conditional on the Ohaupo committee waiving its previous decision and agreeing to the same conditions as had been accepted by all the other districts, and which aimed for the general good and the establishment of a district rather than a local fund. The matter was considered by the Ohaupo committee, which found that it had not the power to vary the set conditions laid down by the public meeting, and, as it was impossible to secure a further representative public meeting in the very limited time, the nomination had to be withdrawn.
