LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At the meeting of the Auckland Education Board, held on Tuesday, Mrs E. M. Bluck was appointed temporary assistant teacher at the Te Awamutu school. To honour the members that have given their services to the Empire, the Te Awamutu Town Band has decided to erect an honours board in the band room containing their names. At the meeting of the Auckland Education Board on Tuesday evening, it was decided that the architect's report of his inquiry into the destruction of the Ohaupo school by fire be forwarded to the Department, and that application be made to the Minister for a grant to erect a new school to accommodate 162 pupils. In response to an appeal published through the correspondence columns of this paper the other clay for equipment for the men now serving at the front, Mr W. J. Bickerstaff has handed in a set of binoculars. Should other residents desire to contribute to this worthy appeal we will be pleased to receive their donations and to see that they are forwarded to the proper quarter.

At their mart on Saturday, 24th inst., Messrs Lawson and Swain will sell, on behalf of Mr F. R, Moody, Kihikihi, a quantity of fruit and shelter trees and ornamental shrubs.

In future, all official notifications from the separate committee's working in connection with the Queen Carnival contest will appear on Page I of this journal. Special arrangements have been made with the committee's to that effect, and the regular space is devoted to notices of interest to-day. Every lady's Journal has arranged a picture puzzle competition that will provide amusement for its readers extending over some months, and also teach them how to pronounce war names. The picture puzzles will represent places in the war zone. The competition is open to everybody, the only condition being that they shall purchase the months' issues of the Journal in which the puzzles appear. There are 122 prizes, ranging from a cash prize of £SO to a gift volume. It is worth'while buying the current issue in order to sample the puzzles, and'learn how to secure a booklet of towns with pronunciations.
