THE CALL OF YOUTH

INTER-HOUSE SPORTS CARNIVAL INSPIRING DISPLAY. AGGREGATE PRIZE GOES TO H.B. FARMERS. WITH WAIPAWA A GOOD SECOND. No one could watch the wonderful display given by the competing teams from this district and the exhibi- | tions given by the Napier teams at I the Inter-house Carnival held on Saturday without being impressed with the inspiration of youth. The training necessary to bring about the perfection of rhythm and the precision of movement must unquestionably have a beneficial effect on those taking part, and as a healthy body is a fit mate for a healthy mind so the future of these girls should be perceptibly improved. The only regret in regard to Saturday’s function was that there was only one Waipawa team. We hope to see this remedied next year. In past years the carnivals have been organised and run by the local branch of the Plunket Society, but as this body had decided to suspend operations for the duration of the war the Waipawa Amateur Athletic Club took up the running and ran Saturday’s carnival for the Patriotic Fund. And it must be conceded that the results fully justified their action. Despite counter-attractions in a garden fete at Otane and bowling competitions the attendance -in the afternoon was quite satisfactory, whilst in the evening it was fully up to expectations. Three teams came up specially from Napier, the representatives of Blythes, Y.W.C.A., and the H.B. Farmers, and they took part in the grand parade to Coronation Park, after the competing teams had been judged for costumes at Nelly Jull Park by Misses Joyce Goodger and Doris Goldsbury, both of Napier. At the afternoon session the outstanding feature was the marching competition, and it was a source of great pride to residents of Waipawa to see the splendid work of the Waipawa Motors team, under the direction of Miss P. Wynn, and it was

not surprising when the_ results of the various competitions were announced in the evening to learn that this team had secured the honors. This must have been pleasing to their instructor, Mr C. E. T. Woods.

The other competing teams were Hi.B. Farmers (Waipnkurau), Hawke and Co. (Waipukurau), Cullifords (Norsewood) and Mackenzies (Waipuknrau), and all gave a good account of themselves in one or other sections of the carnival.

Mr Lynch, of Napier, was again on duty as O.C. He has a decided flair for this sort of thing, and a way with him that commands the esteem and respect of all competitors. He was ably assisted by Mr Thorp, also of Napier.

At the close of Ihe grand finale in the evening, in which the whole of the competing and exhibition teams took part in a maze of marching, the results were announced by Mr E. C. Kingston and the trophies were presented by Mr C. G. E. Harker, president of the club and member for the district. ,

Mr Barker paid well-deserved tribute to all who had been concerned in organising and running the carnival, and expressed thanks to the Napier teams for their wonderful cooperation and support. Unlimited praise is_ due to the Waipawa Municipal Band, under the direction of Mr E. J. Maher, for their great work at both sessions. Theirs was probably the hardest part of the whole programme. Mich credit is also du to the secretary of the club, Mr Frank Adeane junr. Considering that this was his first effort in organising a sports function he did remarkably well in having all the, arrangements so complete. At the close of the carnival the visiting girls were the guests of the management at an impromptu dance held in the Hall, and a most successful function closed at midnight. The visiting girls were also entertained at tea in the afternoon. Results of the various competitions are as under:—
