Struck by two of the beams which fell suddenly from some piling he was cutting away at the Napier Breakwater, a workman, Mr AY. Fenn, suffered concussion and seal]) wounds on AA r ednesday afternoon. He was removed to the Napier Public Hospital, and a report from there last night indicated that he was progressing satisfactorily. Mr Fenn had been lowered over the side of Glasgow AA’harf, and was engaged in cutting bolts from a section of spring piling there when it suddenly gave way, and he was struck by two of the beams. Every endeavor is made by the placement officer to fill requirements, though in some instances there are difficulties. A farm couple was wanted for a district in the North Island. The first couple engaged had domestic differences which necessitated their leaving the farm. Another couple was engaged, but on the day on which they were to commence their duties, the car in which they were driving capsized, and the husband was killed. The third couple engaged, however, are still on the farm, and the owner has written specially thanking the placement officer for the pains taken, and expressing complete satisfaction with his selection.

Something particularly striking in musical accomplishment is to be anticipated when the band and concert party of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind visits AA r aipawa in October. The majority of its 24 members are totally blind, but this fact has by no means affected their capacity as musicians, indeed, because of their keen ear, memory training, and natural enjoyment, they have material advantages. Cheerful and interested in many things, they are a happy band of young men who have conquered blindness and allow it to trouble them no more. The band has already made three New Zealand tours. Its members are active workers at the Institute, their occupations including basket-ware, cane and seagrass furniture, mat making, piano tuning, joinery, professional music and teaching, while some are senior schoolboys.
