CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY COMMITTEE. The first meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Relief Committee was held at Waipukurau this . iiiLg, when there were present— V. A. E. J nil (member for the district), Mr R. McLean (Mayor of Waipukurau), Mr G. Hunt (Mayor of Waipawa), Mr C. Pattison (chairman of the Patangata County Council), Mr A. C. Russell (chairman of the Waipukurau County Council), Mr L. Glenny (chairman of the Waipawa County Council), Mr A. O. Williams (district agent of the Public Trustee), and Mr Coad (representative of the Public Works Department. Mr McLean was elected chairman of the committee. A resolution was passed urging refugees from Hastings to return to their homes as fcoon as* possible, so that they can assist in the work of estoration there. In regard to restoration Mr Coad said it appeared clear that there was very little hope of any portion of the relief fund being available for that purpose. Anything in that direction rested with the policy of the Government, in providing money by loan or otherwise. It was*, however, proposed to give local authorties power to deal with the question of the re-erection of chimneys. Mr Hunt stated that the Waipawa Borough Council had already taken steps in that direction, provision to meet such a case being made in the Local Bodies’ Act. The Council had asked the Government either to provide the money or authorise the Council to raise it themselves. A resolution was passed asking the Government to provide funds fqr the estoration of mfi l'c such as °’asworks. water mains, etc. Mr Hunt incurred as to what the word “claims” in the Public Trustee’s advertisement referred to, and was informed that it referred to expenses incurred by local relief com* mittces.
