CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.
A LATE RUSH.
Business people arc to-day expencncing the usual laid-minute Christmas rush, although jtbe returns yesteiday were eminently satisfactory. Purchases indicate the growing popularity of gilts of real practical value as against (lie purely ornamental, hut the tradesman does not mind what form a presentation may take so long us he turns over the money. Shopkeepers have entered very extensively lor the needs of the Christmas cu»lomer, and the range of goods is so large (hat little difficulty should he experienced by the shopper in making his or her selections. A brave effort has beta made to fostei the Christmas feeling. Business places have been decorated with greenery and hunting, whilst to-night festoons of colored lights across the principal slreefs will impart an “ ir of festivity to the busy scene. The Afunicipal Band will add j ll the spirit of jollity with a concert the main street, the programme 1° include a number of carols. AVhcn shopping is finished the Pictures will provide quid relax* - lion to finish up the day. The commencement of the programme n* f been delayed till 8.30 to suit the convenience of the public.
