PERSONAL ITEMS.
A cable message from Sydney states that Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry and Professor V. A. Bailey are passengers on the Maunganui for Auckland. A telegram from Christchurch records the death of Mr S. E. McCarthy, who was for a number of years Stipendiary Magistrate in the Hawke’s Bay district. Since his retirement from the bench he has been practising in Christchurch. The Chief Justice, Sir Charles Skerrett, has so far recovered from the operations which necessitated the amputation of both legs, that he will be able to resume his seat on the bench in February. The engagement is announced of Ethel, fourth daughter of Mr J. Lindsay, Wakarara, to Vincent, youngest son of Mrs and the late Mr T. Montgomery, Mititai, Northern Wairoa.
The death of a former Waipawa resident, in the person of Mr E. TI. Newman, took place in Christchurch on Tuesday. Deceased followed the occupation of draper and after leaving Waipawa accepted a responsible position with a Christchurch firm.
