A NOTED BAPTIST MINISTER. (Electric Telegraph.—Copyright). (Received This day, 8.25 a.m.) LONDON, March 13. The death is announced of the Rev. John Howard Shakespeare, aged 71 years, who raised three-quarters of a million for the Baptist cause. Few Non-Conformist ministers exerted greater influence on Britain’s religious life. He was intended for the Civil Service, but a nervous, trembling band prevented his writing his final examination.—(A. & N.Z.) Deceased was secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland, also European secretary of the Baptist World Alliance, president of the National Council of Evangelical Free. Churches in 1910, Moderator of the Federal Council of the Evangelical Free Churches of England, chairman of the United Army, Navv and Air Force Board. He was born at Malton, Yorkshire, and educated at University College, London.
