GOLDEN WEDDING.
On Saturday evening last a large number of relatives met in St. Peter’s Schoolroom, Waipawa, to congratulate Mr and Mrs E. E. O’Halloran on the occasion of their golden wedding Owing largely lo tlir manner in which the function had been organised by Mr K. R. O’Halloian, a most enjoy able entertainment was provided, despite the fact that several guests wcrejyrevented from being present by the inclement weather. An unusual feature of the event was the fact that both the bridesmaid (Mrs Ridge) and the best man (Mr W. Pike), were still alive and well. The best man is the bride’s uncle, and has the distinction of having a groal-great-great niece.
After an enjoyable high tea and appropriate toasts, recitations, dances, songs, and instrumental items were given by the relatives of the happy couple, and a blight informal dance and supper brought the happy evening to a close.
The bride wore a very smart frock of black and white crepe de chine, and carried a pretty bouquet of gold flowers and fern. An interesting item was an account given hv the bridegroom of the widely different conditions of earlier days, of the happy settler, though he might he called upon to ford rivers flooded from bank to hank, or to risk his life on the open spans of railway bridges. The Waipawa bridge at that time was provided with hut a narrow plank for the convenience of pedestrians, one of whom fell and was killed. The rates and regulations which hem in the modern citizen were then non existent. The speaker enlivened his statements of simple fact with several apt anecdotes illustrative of tin* sterling, straightforward character of the pioneers who gave this fair young country so sure a footing among the more youthful countries of the world.
