Between 5000 and 6000 spectators witnessed the final Ranfurly Shield match of the season at Hastings on Wednesday afternoon between Otago and Hawke’s Bay. A strong wind was blowing and this affected play very considerably, rendering accurate handling of the oval very difficult. Otago had the advantage of the wind in the first spell, and ran up 14 points to Hawke’s Bay’s 3. Webb scored two really pretty tries, one of which was converted by Donnelly. Penalty goals were landed by Stevenson and Townshend. Blake scored for Hawke’s Bay, Yates failing to enhance.

With the wind, weight, condition and combination to help them in the second half the Bay romped all over the visitors, who, however, put up a game defence against overwhelming odds. Soon after the start Blake scored again, well out, Yates failing in a good eifort to add the major points. Then Blake finished off a fine movement initiated by Gorki!!, and Yates this time landed a beautiful goal. Hawke’s Bay had added eight points in seven minutes. After a short period of even play Mill scored a beautiful try, and Yates converting placed Bay in the lead —16—14. From this out ihe issue was in no doubt, and tries were registered in quick succession. Walker scored under the posts and Grenside converted. Falwasser was the next lucky one, and Grenside again goaled. Then C. Brownlie ambled over, for Grenside to register another goal. The last score came from Ormond, Yates failing to enhance, and the game ended— Hawke’s Bay . 34 Otago 14 HAWKE’S BAY’S SCORE RECORD.
