Mr J. Hennessv has disposed of his hairdressing 1 and tobacconist business to Mr W. J. Harris, and purposes leaving shortly for Auckland. Mr A. E. dull is to be asked by the Napier Chamber of Commerce to act as their representative at the Motor Transport Conference to he held in the United States on Mav 21st.
The following new .Justices of the Peace for the Hawke’s Bay district are gazetted:—J. H. Absolum, of Rissington; A. A. George, Hastings; H. L. Barker, Wairoa; P. .1. O’Kane, Wairoa; AY. H. Rathbone, Waipawa: W. E. Yates, Waipawa.
On Wednesday the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey) celebrated the thirtieth anniversary ol his election to Parliament. Mr Mas sty was first returned for the electorate of Waitemata, which he represented from 1894 to 189(1. In the latter year Mr Massey was elected member for Franklin and he has been representative of that constituency ever since.
A Berlin cable message states that Herr Von Stinnes is reported to be in a most critical condition of health. A life and death struggle is taking place in a nursing home in West Berlin. He was admitted a few weeks ago suffering from a troublesome internal complaint and was operated on, but had a serious relapse last week and underwent a second severe operation. Consternation has been created on the Bourse, where shares are dropping, especially Stinnes’ companies. Some are ten per cent, lower. A later message records the death of Herr Stinnes. The quarterly meeting of the Methodist circuit, held at Waipukurau last evening, was followed by a social
gathering at which opportunity was taken to bid farewell to the Rev. W. S. Neal, who “moves on” next week. Mr Kerse, on behalf of the Waipiikuvau congregation, presented Mr Neal with an oak clock, and Mr Major also spoke, wishing Mr and Mrs Neal happiness and success in their new sphere of labors. Appreciative acknowledgment was made by Mr Neal The Rev. Mr Parker, of Palmerstoi South, will fill the vacancy created by Mr Neal’s transfer.
A very jolly little function was held in St. Peter’s Schoolroom last evening, when a euchre party and dance were held by the tennis section of the Sports Club as a farewell to Mr E. Butterfield, who leaves Waipawa to-morrow to take uj» a position at Stratford. The euchre prizes were won by Miss Campbell and Mr Eagle the boobies by Miss Lindsay and Mi Parker. At a convenient break in the proceedings Mr 11. M. Rathbone, president of the tennis section, presented the guest of the evening with a handsome rug, and in doing so conveyed to him the best wishes of his fellow members for Mr Butterfield’s success in his new life. Pleasing acknowledgment of the gift was made by the recipient.
