NAPIER NEWS.
[Own Correspondent.] Napier, Yesterday. Local wool merchants are hurrying off consignments for the Horae market in the hope that they will catch the first sale of the next series. The Tyser liner Indralema, which left here on Saturday, took from this port 4590 bales and the s.s. Kuraara, which also took her departure on Saturday, shipped 3952 bales. The barque Grassmere is now on the berth loading consignments from growers who are not particularly anxious to be first in the field. The strange conduct of a woman named Jane Campbell led to her arrest on Saturday. She had come to town from Wanstead, it appears, to give evidence against her husband, who she alleged had deserted her. Mrs Campbell went to the police station, used abusive language, asked for a knife with which to commit suicide, jumped over the sea wall threatening to drown herself, and ended up by tying her handerchief round her neck to strangle herself. The police then arrested her. She was remanded for medical examination, but when the Court sat this morning the sergeant of police intimated that the woman had become calm and collected, and the Magistrate merely convicted her and ordered her to come up for sentence when called upon. As for the case in which she was primarily interested, the Magistrate adjourned the hearing to Waipawa, on Wednesday, the defendant being liberated on his promise to appear. Saturday was an ideal day for cricket and full advantage was taken of it by knights of the willow. In the senior match on the Recreation Grouud, Scinde v. United 8., the latter held the creases until well on in the afternoon, knocking up 188. Scinde fared badly in the fast waning light, and when stumps were drawn had lost 8 wickets for 78. Of the United batsmen Charles Cato was top scorer with a well played 66, and Tuke next with 48. Hallamore [23] was top scorer for Scinde.—The County and United A met at Hastings. The former went to the wickets first and stayed there all afternoon, the score when stumps were drawn being 6 for 192 [Owen not out 70, H. Smith not out 36, Gore 31]. Both matches will be resumed next Saturday.
