Tho Governmeul intend to lay a sing], core cable across Cook Strait and ac order has been sent home for its construction. The Hinemoa on her return from Raratonga will survey a suitable route, In connection with tbe cable a Wheatstone automatic sender and receiver hai been ordered, by which messages can be despatched at a speed of about 450 wordi a minute. It has also been decided to place Dunedin and Wellington in direct telegraphic communication.
