Divine Service.— Service will be conducted on Sunday next as follows : By Rev F. H. Long, at Onga Onga at 3 p.lll. The Turf. —The stewards of the Takapau Racing Club announce the value of the Handicap Hurdle Race to be £lO, and the Takapau Handicap £l2, Entries for these events close on 22nd inst. New Venture. —Mr Walter Adair, of this town, notifies in another column that he will shortly open a grocery store in the Ruataniwha road, Waipawa, and that he is anxious to establish a delivery trade based upon terms of cash on delivery, or of equitable barter. Scrutiny. —Nearly the whole of yesterday was taken up by a scrutiny of the votes recorded during the Waipawa electioneering contest. The scrutiny was granted at the united request of two scrutineers, one for Mr Smith and one for Mr Ormond, and took place before A. St. C. Inglis, Esq., J.P.. resulting in a declared and final majority of 25 for Mr Smith. Masonic.— The annual installation of officers of the Abercorn Lodge, No. 1813, E.C., will take place at the lodgeroom, Waipawa, to-inorrow evening, at 8 p.m. The ceremony of installation of the Worshipful Master elect, Bro. H. J. RsLker, will be performed by P.M.’s Bros. De Berdt Hovell, Beilby, and Chicken. It is intended to hold a banquet after lodge business is concluded. Entries also close at Waipukurau on Saturday, 17th inst., for the Waipukurau Handicap and Ono Mile Race. Particulars of amount of entrance moaey, &c., may be obtained by glancing through our advertising columns. Narrow Escape. The infant daughter of Mr H. Iletcher, of Kaikora, experienced a very narrow escape from death by drowning on the afternoon of Monday last. It appears that in the garden attached to Mr Fletcher’s premises there is a large sink, into which waste water is thrown, and from which the water distributes itself into the kitchen garden through holes for that purpose made in the side of the sink. The blocking up of these holes by solid substances appears to have happened unnoticed, and the sink in consequence remained full of water. Mr Fletcher’s little daughter was playing in the garden on the afternoon when the accident happened, and must have lost her balance and fallen in the sink ; for, being missed, the servant went to look for her in the garden, and found her struggling in the water. Very fortunately the child had not quite lost consciousness, and a warm bath and sojourn in bed for a time completely recovered her from the efflcts of the immersion.

Entertainment. —We remind our readers of Mr Flood’s concert at Kaikora, on Friday evening next. The well-known musical abilities of Mr Flood will be ample evidence of the treat in store for those who enjoy vocal or instrumental interpretations of our best composers, though if further proof were needed, the fact of so many of our best amateurs having assidiously trained for this event would furnish it. As Mr Flood is always ready to lend a helping hand, in his capacity of director and conductor, when similar events are to the fore, we expect to see him get a “ bumper house.”

Accident. —We regret to learn that Mr William Williams (better known as “ Bosen Bill”), of Tarawera, met with a severe accident while on the way to his home on Sunday last. The horse he was riding suddenly swerved at something on the road, pitching Mr Williams violently to the ground. The accident was observed, and medical attendance in the person of Dr Mirbach, who was sent for, was soon at the scene of the aacident, when it was found that Mr Williams had dislocated his collar bone. His injuries were attended to at once, and the sufferer removed home as rapidly as possible, where he now is progressing towards recovery.

Miller and Potts at their office on Saturday last. For the privileges of the race meeting, which will take place at Kaikora on Monday, January 2nd, 1882, the following prices were realised : Publican’s booth, £lO, Mr H.
