Good Racing At Te Aroha Mid-Autumn Meeting

MerI ripay came with a late run for third ahead of Kintimani, who is better suited over a six furlong journey. On -Auckland form, Martial Song was j made win favourite for the .hack Cup and duly won by three lengths from j Strathsfield, who gave her first glimpse of form as a stayer. Bengal Bay who should win before long, was third after being well back early and Jildi Jow also came home well for fourth. ’ General Menteith showed his liking for Te Aroha by winning the Ngarua Handi j cap with ease. He took the lead after a furlong and galloped on strongly to 'beat Driving Creek by two and a half lengths, with a break of four lengths ! to Fleet Fox. Bedivere made up ground j for fourth and should be improved. | The well-bred Vigilantia finished on to win the Kia Ora Handicap by two and a half length from the three-year-old filly Lady Carmel, with the favourite, Ganiah, third and Grand Shepherd fourth.

The usual large attendance was attracted to Te Aroha on Saturday for the club’s mid-autumn meeting. The racing was of high order, but not without several surprises.

One surprise was the good dividend paid by the Cambridge-owned. Artificer m winning the main event, the Te Aroha Handicap. Artificer was always well placed and finished strongly in the straight to beat the fast-finislung Prince liana by three-quarters of a length, with half a lengli to the veteran Chung Chong, who may collect a race in the winter months ahead. Frontier Mac was fourth, followed by Napradek and Foxbay. Swanee did not appear to appreciate the going.

The manner in which Jon Rosa won the Roseland Hack Hurdles, would indicate that he has a definite future among the best jumpers. When asked for an effort at the half-time he quickly took the lead and won easily from an outsider in Monojay with the favourite, Hazara third, after having every chance. Corsair finished on for fourth ahead of Cyclades.

Happy Issue beat a weak field in the first division of the Springdale Hand’ cap, winning by a length and half from Toss-Up, with Theatre Lane a fair third. Leon Fox, Royal Boy and Herowin were next, the latter having every chance. In the second division, Bramble Leighon beat the favourite, Chatrill, by a neck, with Oslo third and Remand fourth.
