' “This has been greatly due to the continued goodwill of the Tennis Club, who have again permitted us the use of their courts and facilities for which we tender them our thanks. “The high standard of play which Cambridge is noted was maintained throughout the season and very good games of basketball were witnessed on the courts each Saturday. The winners of these weekly competitions were: —A grade, High school A and St Peter’s joint winners of the Sim Cup, and in the B grade Maungatautari were the very proud winners of the ‘Wallis’ Cup at the conclusion of their first season in association play. “The representative ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams travelled to Field Days and Tournaments held in Hamilton, Hnntly, Tauranga, Rotorua and Te Awamutu. At Te Awamutu the ‘B’ team were again successful in annexing the ‘Hodgson’ Cup. “In June the Cambridge Field Day was an unqualified success. Matamata carried off the ‘Haworth Cup 1 ' in the ‘A grade games and Hamilton ‘B’ the ‘Lang Cup’ in the ‘B’ gyade. “The Cambridge representatives who gained Waikato honours and travelled to New 1 Plymouth to take part in the Dominion Tournament this year were V. Thompson, B. Richardson, B. McLaren and J. Christie. Miss C. Wallis accompanied them as a Waikato delegate to the Dominion Council held dai.ng the tournament. “1948 was a “land-mark’’ in the histc.'T- of Basketball in N.Z. as an Australian team visited the country and played test matches in three centres as well as matches with major dVociations. It was the privilege of two Cambridge A players to play against the visiting side while at the Rotorua Tournament. I. Low and M. Paton were selected from those teams playing at the tournament to play the Australians.” An otherwise successful year had been greatly clouded by the loss of the vei\ energetic and enthusiastic President, the late Mr Wallis,” concluded the report.
