FLEMING SHIELD POINTS
half-back and Shaw played one of his best games on the wing. D. Paterson was severely tested at full-back and experienced some anrious moments. His display was ftot withou - : blemish, but nevertheless, lie,, accomplished good work at times. The United custodian, Ozich again performed well, making some brilliant saves. Kerry showed dash on the wing and Knox gave useful service at half-back. Neither Brunskill nor McKenzie had a particularly happy day, although both figured prominently in the movement which brought the matchwinning try. Another highly promising display went to the credit of the promoted junior, I. Plaw, who showed exceptional attacking qualities, Matangi gained the honours narrowly against Hautapu in a game which maintained interest to the end. Some good individual efforts were recorded. Among the backs none showed to better advantage than the young Matangi player, J. Harper while A. Kelly (Hautapu) was also in form making some characteristic bursts. Scott and Banks again shone in the Matangi pack. For Hautapu, A. Arnold was outstanding while Hogan also showed to advantage in his first game of theseason. Keen interest is being shown in the pending selection of the representative team to play Hamilton on May 14. Reports indicate that Hamilton will field a solid team. Its forward pack, which is likely to average in the vicinity of 14 stone will include K. G. Elliott, a 1946 All Black and former Wellington and Manawatu representative. Cambridge defeated Hamilton 10—6 in 1947 and 16— 8 last season but is not likely to find its task easy this term. No doubt next Saturday’s games will provide some assistance to the Selector but several places in the team appear decidedly open. It seems reasonably safe to assume that tried and tested candidates such as Bullick, Brunskill, Kerry and the Arnold brothers will
again be on (leek, and players of the calibre of Day (whose availability seems to be a matter of doubt), I. Paterson and Q. Gray also appear to be near certainties. Yet there is likely to be scope for new material this year and some youngci candidates will probably receive a chance at some stage of the season. No doubt, co-selectors N. Holmes and A. Thompson are men whose experience of the game will ensure the best material available being on hand for the Hamilton game. The following players have been select ed to train with a view to selection: — S. Peters, D. Banks, W. Scott. J. Harper, A. Bullick (Matangi), K. Day, R, Hulse, K. Chandler, G. Brunskill, K. Kerry, I. McKenzie, (United), A. Arnold. T. Arnold, D. Scobie, M. Paton, A. Kelly, A. Hjorth (Hautapu), I. Paterson, Q. Gray, L. Shaw (Leamington).
