Sudden Death on Bowling Green

WELL-KNOWN ROTO-O-RANGI FARMER MR. F. E. CLELAND

The death occurred with rather tragic suddenness at the Leamington Bowling Club’s green on Saturday afternoon last of a well-known Roto-o-rangi farmer in Mr Fredrick Earl Cleland, aged 65 years. During the afternoon Mr Cleland complained of having a headache and later he became unwell and collapsed. Medical attention was sought, but deceased passed away. The late Mr Cleland was born in Lower Hutt and went to school there. With his family he first farmed at Kaponga (Taranaki) and later, with his two brothers, he was interested in a big station at Kohuratahi. Mr Cleland married at Falmerston North in 1929. He subsequently purchased a farm at Kio Kio (Otorohanga district) and farmed there until'l933 when he sold out owing to his two step-sons going overseas. Mr Cleland and his family came to this district in July, 1943, purchasing the farm at Roto-o-rangi.

Deceased was held in great respect by all his friends and acquaintances. He was a keen sportsman and was the owner of a couple of thoroughbreds in Australia. As a young man he played - Rugby in Taranaki and at Otorohanga he was actively interested in tennis and bowling. He was a member of the Leamington Bowling Club and it was during a competition game that he became ill. The late Mr Cleland is survived by his widow, one son, Derek, of Roto-o-rangi; also one step-daughter and two step-sons. They are Mrs Robinson, of Morrinsville; Mr Fred Carter, of Horotiu and Mr Bruce Carter, Whangamomona (Taranaki). There are seven grand-children.
