Mr Fraser said that New Zealand was prepared and was confident of the final result. * * * Hitler ordered his generals to prepare for a winter campaign in Russia. ''# # # The Russians bombed Berlin for the second consecutive night. RACING GRAND NATIONAL MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW The Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting will open at Riccarton tomorrow, the main event being the National Steeplechase of £ISOO. Prospects arei Enfield Steeplechase, about 2f miles: Son and Heir, Ruling Star, Gay Boa. • '•' Cashmere Plate, 6>furlongs: Ren- } arde, Darag; Silver Ball. Jumpers' Flat, U miles: Dividend, King Rey, The Dozer. Paparua Handicap, 6 furlongs: Wings of Song, Sunny Knight, Poutatau. Grand National' Steeplechase, 2£ miles: Bridegroom, Ballybrit, Slayer—Whirr bracket. Trial Hurdles, ll,miles: Cartoonist, Noko, Fundy Bay. * Winter Cup, 1 mile: Treasure—St. Cloud bracket, Gayest Son, Boloyna. Avonliead Handicap, 7 furlongs: Greenbank, Ann Mie, Auburn Lad. THE THAMES MEETING WIN FOR RADIANT VAALS The main event at the Thames Jockey Club's winter meeting on Saturday, the President's Handicap, was won by the Cambridge owned and trained Radiant Vaals. He won easily frpm (|a,mos,, with KiMash third. Very Glad was right up in the next bunch and will be improved by the race. Mr W. Townsend, owner of Radiant Vaals, attempted to complete the double with Sure Pay. The latter finished third after appearing likely at the straight entrance. , The Cambridge apprentice jockey J. Williamson, rode three winners, one of his mounts being Conflagration, who accomplished the unusual feat of winning two steeplechases. He also rode' Expellent to victory in the open sprint and was third on Kilcash .in the President's Handicap. ' ' ' The eight winners were Conflagration, Glenbevan, Harmony, Kena,/ Radiant Vaals, Conflagration, Expellent and Little Rose.
