INDOOR BASKETBALL
A POPULAR RECREATION INTEREST IN NEW ZEALAND In every large centre in New Zealand indoor basketball is taking a popular place in recreation. While the outdoor game is played by many girls in Cambridge, only a few have taken up indoor basketball, playing in Hamilton teams. It can cater for large numbers in a limited space, in a short time, with a minimum requirement in the way of equipment. In Hamilton for instance, 280 players are catered for in a hall 50ft x 35ft, in six hours continuous activity. It is the intention of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Branch togispread interest in the game throughout the Dominion. A pioneer effort in this connection has been undertaken by the branch’s Waikato recreation officers. They are taking representatives fron various sports bodies and training them as coaches in the game so that they may in turn coach teams in llicir respective organisations. Rugby, athletic, harrier and association football clubs and physical training organisations, have decided to take up the game as an excellent avenue of training, as it com-
bines all the requirements of skill, speed and stamina, without a great K risk of personal bodily injury. The present Hamilton championship teams will be taken, from town to town to give demonstrations of the actual game. In places where no suitable hall is in existence, the game .' is being promoted as an outdoor. summer evening game. floodlit courts are being prepared* in. such places. The same lines of approach will be applied in other areas.
A fine specimen of a carved tobacco pipe of genuine Maori workriian’&hip was knocked down in a Wellington auction room the other day for 15/-. A bargain! There are plenty of carved pipes of allegedly Maori make about. Most of ’em were made in Birmingham. The genuine article is scarce, and worth money. Pipe carving is becoming a lost Maori art. Fortunately there’s plenty of New Zealand tobacco, though! And it’s not only of extraordinarily fine flavour, sweet, cool, and fragrant, but unlike the foreign brands is practically free from
-nicotine, so that you can smoke it, all day long and feel no ill effects.. This is due in part to the soil in which it is grown, and in part to the toasting of the leaf which process not only largely helps to eliminate the nicotine but develops flavour and bouquet. This tobacco is produced by the National Tobacco Go. (pioneers of the N.Z. tobaccn industry). Ask for “Riverhead Gold” and “I)esert Gold” (mild) r “Cavendish” (medium), “Navy Cut No 3” (medium), or “Cut Plug No. 10” (tull strength). Absolutely safe, because of the toasting.
