SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS

THE ACCREDITING SYSTEM TO ELIMINATE “FLUKING” School examinations, in. the view of the Education Department of the Tasmanian Government, are a fastcrumbling system. Headmasters'of a number of private secondary schools, however, staunchly assert the value of examinations. The result last year was that some children sat for examinations, and others had their progress judged by the State accrediting system, both classes ultimately obtaining certificates which theoretically should indicate corresponding educational qualifications. The accrediting system is considered to be a real test of knowledge and to eliminate “fluking” of passes in examinations. Id other words, the child is by his own teachers instead of by an external examiner. However, because the State has abolished the award known as the Intermediate Certificate, the public (actually the private) schools have since instituted the Public Schools’ Certificate, which must be won by examination.

So far as the children are concerned, it is just a matter of going to the right school to avoid .examinations.
