SOUTHDOWN RAMS
FAIR AT CLAUDELANDS CAMBRIDGE VENDORS TO THE FORE The first annual fair of the Waikato Sheepbreeders' Association was held at Claudelands on Thursday and proved very successful. Cambridge breeders figured prominently among the high prices. Nearly 700 rams were catalogued for yesterday's auction, but all entries did not come into the sale-ring as a result of the strict inspection by the inspection committee appointed by the association. The entries were representative mainly of Waikato breeders with several outstanding lines from southern breeders. One of the most successful vendors was Mr C. J. Hawken, of Mokoia, Hawera, whose star lots topped the market with prices from 9 to 11 guineas. This southern vendor sold 41 entries at prices exceeding 8 guineas, the lowest sale being made at 6 guineas. Of the Cambridge vendors, rams from M. J. R. H. Nolan, of Roto-o-rangi, fetched prices ranging from 6J to 8£ guineas. Mr W. Harbutt brought a good lot forward which sold from Gh to 7+ guineas. Lines from Mr J. W. Fisher sold at from 5 to 6? guineas, and a consignment from Mr G. Walsh made to 71 guineas. Other Cambridge vendors included Messrs Wynn Brown, C. Charlton, Whewell Bros., V. H. Nolan and T. Robinson.
