JUBILEE APPROACHES
ACTIVITIES OF EXECUTIVE REPORTS FROM COMMITTEES With the Borough Jubilee Celebrations little more than a week away, there was considerable detail business for the executive of the Celebrations Committee, which met on Tuesday night to make further arrangements for the week’s functions. His Worship the Mayor, Mr C. H. Priestley, presided. Messrs S. N. Ziman, F. R. Wooldridge and H. Tairi were elected to the executive. The Assistant Commissioner of Stamp Duties wrote informing the committee that as the net proceeds of the entertainment were not being devoted to some pliilantrophic or charitable object amusement tax would have to be paid. The chairman said that it was in-
definite if any profit would be made,
but if a surplus was in hand the | fund would be used for the beaut i**''‘fication of the town. It was decided to interview the Assistant Commissioner in Auckland to seek a more satisfactory arrangement. Budget Estimates After drawing up an estimated budget for the Jubilee expenses, MiRay thought that if the weather was fine for the week a surplus of about £BO might be expected. His estimates were: Receipts: Trotting, £2O; Golf, £10; Choral, £10; Poster Parade, £10; Play, £10; Ball, £3O; Procession and Band Parade, £3O; Football, £5; Side Shows, £5. Total, £l3O. Expenses: Wednesday’s Re-union, £35; Children’s Sports, £2O. Total, £65. Entertainment Committee Mr Edgar James reported that the businessmen’s sub-committee had restricted their efforts to a window dressing display which he outlined. The lighting committee also had the decorations well in hand, but as hiring of flags was so expensive, it was found necessary to somewhat limit the decorations of this nature. An entertaining programme, in;cluding several toasts, had been arranged to follow the meeting of the jfcpough Council. Other functions also outlined by Mr James. side-shows, Mr James said that as businessmen had objected to excessive numbers it had been decided to permit only two sideshows to visit the town. The speaker said that many further applications had been declined. The merry-go-round will be situated near the Bank of New Zealand, while the other sjdeshow, the big wheel, would be placed further up the street. i Broadcasting of Functions
Arrangements for a loud-speaker system were detailed by Mr James. On Monday a speaker, broadcasting between 12 and 3 p.m. from the Town, Clock, would forecast the programme. Similar arrangements were suggested for Tuesday. For Wednesday it was proposed that a speaker amplify in the Town Hall, the council meeting ceremony. On Thursday the first-day arrangements could be duplicated. On Friday it was thought to in•stal the speaker at the school sports. The remainder of the day would follow first-day proposals. On Saturday a speaker, following the procession could detail the items of interest. The ceremonies at the showground could be broadcast later in the day. It was suggested that Sunday’s thanksgiving service be broadcast also. The total cost for the week would be £2O, which Mr James said was a reduced fee. On the motion of Mr Ziman it
Was, decided to engage the loudspeaker system, as outlined by Mr James. Mrs G. (1. L. Taylor reported that arrangements for the ball were ail in progress. She said that it was necessary to obtain a judge I'or the set costumes. If there were three joint judges it would be more satisfactory.
The names of two Auckland visitors to judge were suggested, while a third could be engaged from Hamilton. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mrs Taylor and Mr Yennell with power to act. The offer of Mesdames J. C. Sawers and Townend to play the music for the dancing of the period sets had been, accepted, said Mrs Taylor. Mr James suggested that old identities should be invited to take part in the Grand March at the ball. Mr Ray thought instead of formally inviting fhem, any old identities who attend the ball should be invited on the night. Wide ribbon sashes printed upon will be awarded as prizes at the ball.
The Rugby Match Mr W. Drake reporting on behalf of the Sports Committee, said that the trotting and golf fixtures prom%iifced to be successful. :
