GATHERING AT CAMBRIDGE. AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON. ytho Cambridge Polo Club hold an enjoyable sports gathering at -the Cambridge Trotting Club's grounds on Saturday afternoon last. The weather was fine, though rain threatened in midafternoon and there was a fairly good .attendance.' The various events were all keenly contested, and entries being large, a'capital afternoon's sport was provided. Messrs H. Crowther and F. Vospcr ;a«ted as judges, giving every satisfaction, while Mr Wynn Brown dispatched his fields in good style. Mr Alt Swayne was clerk of the course, Mr C. Meredith elerk of scales, Mr N. Banks time-keeper, while Mr R, G, Blonnerhasaett made an efficient and painstaking secretary. Tho executive officers carried out their duties efficiently and all went off without a hitch. Following are the results of the various events: — Bending Competition.—The heat winners were: A. Fisher, K. Butler, W. Phillips, Clemett, McQueen, and A. Fisher. The final was fought out between Phillips and A. Fisher, the former winning in good style. There were fifteen entrants. Visitors' Plate, two furlongs Sea Day (W. Phillips), 12st 1 Loch Abbey (W. I. Taylor) 12.3* 2 Glen Abbey (W. I .Taylor) 12.7 .. 3 Won by a nose after a great race up the straight. Glen Abbey a length away, third. Time 26 3-5. There were •.thirteen starters. Polo Ball Race.—The heat winners •were: Townsend, R. Ranstead. M. Garland, McQueen, V. Chitty, T. Hives and Townsend. The semi-final winners T/vore: Ranstead and Hines and in the final run off T. Hines secured a good win. Hurdle R-nce, six furlongs.— Qlenfoil (.Tas. Tayor), .11.101 .... 1 Tui (A. M. Piahor), 12.10 J ;...... 2 Milford (W. Phillips), 11.10* " Waiwera and Tauwhare also ran. Tui and Milford made the pace running neck to neck till the straight was reached, when Glenfoil came with a strong bid and ran home a fairly easy •winner by a couple of lengths, the •same distance between Tui and Milford. Time 1.31 2-5. '■■■: • Kerosene Tin and Nightshirt Race.--Hines, Phillips and Clemett were the .SKi-iffier*; of the three heats and in the iinal Phillips won with Hines second. This event created much amusement. The competitors had to run on foot about 50yds, clothe themselves "in a nightdress, run another distance, secure a. kerosene tin, mount, and ride to the. -winning post. There were several spills and the grotesque way in whicF several of the competitors rode their torses caused roars of laughter. Polo Cup, four furlongs. First prize €up valued £lO. Sea Day (W. Phillips), 12st 1 Loch Abbey (W. I. Taylor), 12.7 .. .2 ■Gold Dust (Wynn Brown), 12.3* .. 3 Also started: Orakau (L. R. Kay), Monastery (J. Butler), Lady Betty (R. Townsend), Glenfoil (Jas. Taylor), and Lady Betty (C.Potts). The winner got the best of tho start, and was never headed. It was an excellent race, Sea Day winning by a length; a similar distance botween second and third horses. Time 50 4-5. Flay Relay Race.— Te Mata (R. Ranstead, W. Phillips, G. McQueon, F. Clemett) 1 -Cambridge A (Blcnnerhassett, F. Baker, A. M. Fisher, M. Garland) 2 Cambridge B and Matangi teams also ■competed. This was an interesting and well contested event. y Consolation Race, three furlongs ild Dust (Wynn Brown) 1 ftkau (L. K. Kay) 2 Waitaki and Glen Abbey also started. Won fairly easily; good race between second and third horses. Time 395. Presentation. At the close of the gathering, the handsome trophios, as prizes, were pre* sented to tho fortunate, winners by Mr Wynn Brown, who made a few suitable remarks. Dance. In the evening a most enjoyable and successful dance was held at the Hautapu Hall, there being about sixty #ouple present. The hall was nicely docorated with streamers and a capital supper was served. Visitors and local polo enthusiasts alike had a capital time.
