In sheltered positions weeping willows in Cambridge are already breaking into leaf. This is exceptionally early in the season —about a fortnight earlier than usual —and is evidently due to the mild autumn and early winter.

The Rotorua Borough Council at its last meeting decided to send a letter to the chairman of the No. 2 District Highways Council pointing out that a small section of the Mamaku Road, within its area, was holding up the traffic, and asking it to make it at least passable.

Once again the Cambridge Masonic Hotel is about to change hands, Mr A. Montgomery having disposed of his interests to Mr T. Cray, architect, of Hamilton, who will take over in about a fortnight’s time. Mr Montgomery is at present negotiating with a view to acquiring the license of a hotel in tho Carterton district, but it is not likely that Mr and Mrs Montgomery will be leaving Cambridge for several weeks.

The fire report tabled at the recent annual meeting of the Fire Brigade showed that during the year 11 alarms of fire were given, three of which wore false alarms, and in one instance malicious. The most serious outbreak was th,e Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.’s premises and the damaging of the Central Hotel on July 1 and 2 respectively. With the exception of these two fires the fire loss in the borough for the year was small.

A "break-up” party in • connection with the Cambridge District High School is to be held at the Town Hall on Thursday, 25th inst. The school committee and teachers will be glad of the hearty co-operation of parents and friends, and a meeting will be called a little later on to make arrangements for the, function.* The proceeds will be devoted to. the schools sports and ground improvements funds.

An echo of the recent railway smash in Tlniaru was found in tho work of one of the pupils of a primary school in South Canterbury (says the Timaru Herald). The children had been requested to write a composition on " A Railway Accident.” The spelling of the word brakes gave trouble to many and one youthful essayist accomplished the following: "When the enginedriver heard the crash he at once pulled on his brocks.”

This is a sample of the fare provided in geography books in the Old Country and sent for use in secondary schools in New Zealand, remarks an exchange. "Maoris live and work among.the New Zealanders. Tho Maori has progressed so far that he cultivates the ground and can build boats for fishing.” The more modern editions will probably inform us that the Maori girl has advanced so far as to wear the latest European fashions in dress.

The top-dressing of pasture is being pushed ahead steadily (says the Otago Daily Times), many farmers favouring basic slag, others keeping to superphosphates and lime. It is noticeable this season that a number of farmers are using potash fairly extensively, and this manure seems to be coming into great favour. All soils, whether chemically. rich in potash or not, respond readily to potash. These fertilisers owe their value to the part they play in connection with the production of sugar or starch in the plant's and leaves, andthe storing of these mate rials in the grain, root, or fruit.

Members and adherents of Trinity Presbyterian Church are invited to attend the annual congregational meeting and social to be held on the Peace Memorial Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening at 7.30.

In connection with the licensing of the Town Hall to the Hippodrome Pictures, Ltd., which was sanctioned by the Cambridge Borough Council on Thursday night, our report of the council meeting did not make the conditions quite clear in one respect. The term of the license is for five years, with a right of renewal for a further similar term, at an enhanced rental. At the end of the ten years, should lessees wish to continue the lease, and the council has no objection thereto, a further term of five years shall be granted at £l2 10/ per week. Should, however, the council so desire it, they can then terminate the license, but in that event, they must compensate the licensees to the extent of the cost of the new ceiling being put in (£SOO, less what is secured for the sale of iron roofing being sold).
