CAMBRIDGE BOY SCOUTS

IN CAMP AT MATAMATA TIRED BUT HAPPY The following account of the Cambridge Boy .Scouts’ trek to Matamata, and their camp there, appears in the Matamata Record;. —

A detachment of twenty of the Cambridge troop of Boy Scouts,, who trekked through from their home town, are now in Mat am at a, and on the night of their arrival camped in. the vicarage paddock, Matamata. The boys left Cambridge on Monday morning and completed the first stage, that to Taotaoroa, at three o ’clock the same afternoon. Here Mrs- Ling kindly placed her bam at their disposal, an act much appreciated by the Scouts. The trail was hit again at six. on Tuesday morning,, and the Scouts, reached the gjaxo factory,, Matamata.,, just as the, noonday whistle blew. They pulled a hand-cart-containing provisions, accessories and gear, all the way, and arrived at the end of their 2d mile journey in gpod form, and spirits, This is the longpst trek, they have undertaken, last year’s —from Cambridge to Te Awamutu—being, one of about 17 miles. On Tuesday evening the visiting boys were called on by tho band of the Matamata Boy Scouts, under Bandmaster 11. Clcland, who enlivened the visitors with a number of choice items..

It was a tired but happy little band of boys that the Record representative saw iiiside a bell tent when he called at the camp about nine o’clock on Tuesday evemng. Not all of the lads were under canvas, about half-a-dozen of the less hardy of them being accomodated at the vicarage. Scoutmaster Chubb is in charge of the detachment, and is assisted by Troop-Sergeant W. Richards. The boys intend to stay here until Thursday next, the 18uh inst., and during their stay will undergo a course of instruction with a view to qualifying for badges and other meritorious marks.
