THE NEW WHARFE

NECESSITY FOR AN AGENT.

The difficulties of consignees of goods by steamer to Cambridge were discussed at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. Several farmers had consignments of benzine forwarded by steamer, and unfortunately did not know the date of her arrival. Consequently they were not down to take delivery when the ‘Freetrader’ came in, and the goods had to bo left on the river bank. This no doubt causes irritation to the parties concerned, but more than that, it impresses us with the necessity of proceeding with the construction of the wharf and shed. Then in a case like the foregoing, all goods not taken delivery of on arrival of the steamer would be placed under lock and key in the shed, and charged a small amount for storage. It is evident that when times revert to normal there will ?jo a big increase in river trade and it is quite possible that steamers will come more often than they do now. All this points to the necessity for a wharf and shod. The Cambridge Borough Council and the Chamber of Commerce have everything in readiness to proceed with this structure and it will be gone on with as soon as the matter of a Government subsidy has been arranged. In the meantime the company running- the “Freetrader” should appoint an agent here in Cambridge. This matter is urgent because at the present time consignees ring up business people nil over tlie town asking when the steamer is expected, and sometimes after she lias gone again, they ask if anything is known of goods consigned to them.

The steamship company therefore should lose no time in appointing a live agent in the town, who will attend to all these matters and supply information to possible users of the service.
