CONDUCT OF THE COSSACKS
GERMAN PAPER'S TRIBUTE. "MOST EXEMPLARY BEHAVIOUR." Received 9.15 a.m., 2nd. London, October 1. Herr Vousache, Mayor of Insterberg, in an article in the newspaper Der Ton, says that when the German troops withdrew from Gumbinnen the citizens were transformed to senseless cowards and fled in dismay, crowding the railways and hampering the soldiers. The Vossiche Zeitung pays a tribute to the Cossacks' behaviour, which it states was exemplary, notwithstanding provocative acts of some youths. There was not a single instance of lack of respect to women. It adds: "The panic in East Prussia exists exclusively in the Berlin press." NEAR ENUUGH. Received 10.40 a.m., 2nd. Hobart, October 2. The Tainui reports that she was barely 100 miles distant from the Kaiser Wilhelm det Grosse when the latter sank the Kaipara. THE CAROLINE ISLANDS. WIRELESS STATION DESTROYED. BY BRITISH CRUISERS. Received 10.40 a.m., 2nd. Sydney, October 2. Reports have been received that British cruisers destroyed the German Governrrent wireless station at Yap, in the Caroline Islands. After warning the operators, the" cruisers bombarded and completely demolished the station, which was an important link in the German chain of communication with the Far East.
