Priest and People.
AN UNPOPULAR CLERIC. Receiveci;il.2o p.m., 16th. New York, February 16. A riot took place at South Lend, J Indiana, yesterday, in which seven people were seriously injured, and nearly 100 sustained more or less minor hurts. A force of 25 policemen tried to aid the sheriff to carry out an order by Judge Fink that the Rev. Stanislaus Gruza be placed in charge of the St. Casimus Polish Roman Catholic Church. A mob of 200 men and women, however, after fighting for two hours prevented the efforts of Mr Gruza to possess the church. The Fire Department was called out to help the police, but without any better result, the mob threatening to cut the hose. Mr Gruza was appointed to the church a year ago, but the people objected, and asked the bishop for another priest. The request was refused and the case went to Court, where the judge ordered Mr Gruza to have possession.
