. * FAREWELLING THE DEPORTEES' WIVES. Received 12.5 a.m., 17th. Johannesburg, February 16 Thousands of people were present in the station yesterday to say farewell to the wives of Messrs Bain and Watson, who aie proceeding to join Mrs Poutsma and her children aboard the Grantully Castle. The Red Flag was hung over the entrance. Mr Clarke, a Town Councillor, predicted that the deported men would soon return. London, February 16.
The admission was made yesterday by Mr Ramsay Macdonald, chairman of the Labour Party, in a speech at Nelson, that Viscount Gladstone, Governor-General of South Africa, was unable to withhold his sanction to martial law. The speaker sugested that the Viceroy should have resigned rather than sign the proclamation.

MEN NOT PERMITTED TO LAND. DEPORTATION NOT ALTOGETHER A SURPRISE. Received 11.35 a.m., 17th. London, February 16. In the House of Commons, Mr j McKenna announced that the Go- j vernment had no power to prevent; the deported South African Labour leaders from landing. Waterston, ' who is an Australian, and Poutsma, who is a naturalised Britisher, could not be prevented as aliens. Received 12.10 p.m., 17th. London, February 16. ' The steamer Umgeni called at Las Palmas, in the Canary Island?, for i provisions. Nobody was allowed to embark or disembark. The deported Labourites, inter' I viewed from a launch, said they had intended to insist on landing, but afterwards decided not to land, in ! order not to compromise the captain and officers, who had treated them with kindness.
Bain declined to make any statement pending a consultation with the English ieaders, but admitted that trio deportation was not altogether a surprise.
