ROAD METAL.
TO the editor. Sir, —Among the many important subjects discussed at the recent Farmers' Union Conference in Auckland, there is, in my opinion, none of more importance than the ' free carriage of road metal by our railways,' which was unfortunately omitted. There is not much use in growing heavy crops of grain produce, etc., if our roads are not in a condition to carry them to the railway. The free or reduced rate of freight on artificial manures will no doubt result in an increase of goods to be carried, but it might bo held that this would only benefit the producer ; but the free carriuge of road metal and consequent good roads would hcuelit the country generally. I hope the question may be takeu up at tht next meeting of the branches, and that the conference at Wellington be asked to consider the matter.—l am, etc., F. C. Germann. Patcraugi, May 14th, 1903.
