HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of ihe Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Chambers last evening. There were present: His Wor ship the Mayor and Councillors R. Parr, A. Coyle, W. Dey, G. Pearson, A. E. Manning, J. Bettley, D. Salmon, J. A. Young, and U. S. Hardley. Gravelling. —Mr C. F. Atkinson wrote calling the attention of the Co ncil to the state of the road leading to his lesidenoe, and asking tor some repairs,— On i he motion of Cr Young, seconded by Cr Parr, this matter was referred to the Works Committee. Clarence Street. —A petition signed by Mrs W. .1. Hunter and thirty others was received requesting that a lamp should be erected and other improvements effected in Clarence Street.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee, who will allot the positions in which the extra lamps in the Borough will be erected. Wooden Building. —MrThos. M. Hill applied for permission to erect hie dwelling house in Tisdall Street in wood, as he was not in a position to erect it in brick. —The letter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee for their report, Waikato A. andP. Association. —Mr J. A. Milne, Secret iry of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, wrote asking if the Council would grant the use of the spare room in the Council Chambers for an office —The request was granted. N, xious Weeds. —Mr Gaffney, Hamilton blast, requested to be allowed to p’ough and level the roadside frontages to Sections 240-1-2, Hamilton East, for the purpose of destroying noxious weeds. Referred to the Works Committee. Lamp. —A petition signed by 15 residents of Collingwood and Lower Anglesea Streets was received, asking the Council to erect a lamp at the junction of the two streets named.—Referred to the Works Committee. Poundkebpsr. —Mr F. Hunt tendered for the lease of the Hamilton pound at £2 a year.—The offer was accepted. Suspension Bridge. —A letter from Mr Brittain regarding a suspension bridge to replace the present traffic bridge at Hamilton was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. Compensation. —Dr Brewie wrote as follows : ‘ When driving home down the road opposite Mr Gilmour's bouse on Wednesday evening my horse put his foot into a hole in the soft soil over a recently-laid waterpipe, and, falling, broke his knees. Mr Lyons has examined him and considers that the injury will knock £5 off his value and he will be unfit for work for some weeks. I must, therefore, ask your Council to compensate me to the amount of £lO. to cover injury to me and loss of service of my horse.’ — Referred to the Legal and Finance Committee for their report. Right or- Way— Mr D. R. Bain again wrote with reference to the right-of-way to his premises. He said he understood that the road-forming alongside Garden Place was undertaken with this end in view, but he failed to see how it was going to benefit him in the slightest,— This matter was also referred to the Works Committee to report upon at the next meeting of the Council. Hospital Board Representative— Cr. V'cy was nominated to succeed Mr R. W. Dyer as the Council’s representative on the Waikato Hospital Board, and the Counoil pasted a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Dyer for his services. Finance —The Clerk read the following financial statement :—Overdraft Ist April, £441 17s fid ; accounts passed at last meeting, £202 I2i 5d ; reoe : pts since April Ist, £137 5s 5d ; debit balance at date, £6S3 5s 9d. Accounts The following accounts were passed for payment: —T. W. Maunder £ll la 7d, J. McPherson £1 16s Sd, N. Sheppard £1 la, K. J. Pauli £ls I4s Sd, W. I. Conradi £6 13s 4d, J. Devitt £4, Waikato Argus ss, petty cash £2l 3s sd, Can Company £22 fis 3d, W. McKenzie £4, T. Jones £67 ‘2s fid, J. Davis £O, W. Revell £7 14s, J Quinn £lO 10?, H. Kelly £6 14s fid, F. Gatidin £2 is. Committees. —The following Committees were appointed for the ensuing year : —Legal and Finance Committee : The Mayor, and Crs. Dey, Parr and Toung ; Works, Endowment and Cemetery Committee : Crs. Coyle, Salmon, Pearson and Bettley ; Waterworks Committee : Crs. Parr, Young, Hardley and Manning ; Improvement Committee : Cra. Dey, Parr, and Hardley, and Messrs J. S. Bond, J. T. Horne, H I. Biggs, and Dr. Breads ; Library Committee; The Mayor, and Crs. Dey and Manning. Cheques. —The Mayor and Cr. Parr and the Treasurer were appointed to sign cheques on behalf of the Council. Niqiitsoil. —On the motion of Cr. Hardley, the Works Committee were requested to report upon the question of a nightsoil system for the Borough. Waterworks. The Mayor moved that the Council at its rising adjourn until Thursday evening next to consider the waterworks contract, and that in the meantime the Legal and Finance Com mittee he empowered to obtain a legal opinion as to th« Council's position in the matter. The Mayor said he did this because there were a number of new members on the Council who were not in a position to know, and he would like to obtain a legal opinion as to the position of the matter. The other parties had a legal opinion and knew exactly where they stood. He was anxious to ge: the matter settled at the earliest possible moment. There was not the a ightest doubt about what they intended to do, but they should he fortified with a legal opinion. —Cr Manning seconded the motion, which was carried. Several accounts, amounting to nearly £IOO, from Messrs Chambers and Son, E. Porter and Co. and H. Upton, were deferred until this meeting. Notice oe Motion. —Cr Parr gave notice to move at the next meeting that By-laws No. 43, 45 and 45 he rescinded and that the Council go into committee as a whole to consider the question of regulating the style of buildings only on the main street, without reference to the compulsory brick or iron regulations. DOMAIN BOARD The meeting of the Domain Board was adjourned until Thursday next.
