Wellington, Last Night. The return match between Lord Hawke's team and the New Zealand combination was begun ou the Ba«in Reserve to-day. The weather was capital and the wicket in excellent order, thongli it would not te surprising wero it to crumble before the issue is finally settled. Fortune favoured Richardson in the spin of the coin, and he decided to bat. Before the innings of the colonials closed they bad reached the respectable total of 274, of which Reese, the young Canterbury player contributed more than half. His was a magnificent display of clean pretty cricket and without a blemish save for a return to Hargreaves, which the latter was not to blame for declining. His score included 19 fourers and eigbt threes. His clean, free bitting all round the wicket was greatly admired, and he received n great ovation when he was dismissed as the eighth wicket, the Englishmen joining in the demonstration. Mahoney and Tucker also hatted with confidence, as did Callaway towards the end of the innings. Thompson, who bore the brunt of the bowling, got four batsmen leg before, each decision coming from the Englishmen's umpire, and in two or three instances the decisions were severely criticised.
