POLO SPORTS AT CAMBRIDGE,
The annual sports of the Cambridge Polo Club were held at Mr James Taylor's pretty farm at ' Bardowie ' yesterday afternoon, and, although the competitors were, with the exception of a few from Hamilton, all local men, the sport was good and the competitions keen. As usual Mr Norman Banks topped the list of winners, and his younger brother, Joe, repeated his performance of last year by winning the consolation race. The cup fell to Innis Taylor, and his win. was greated with much applause, for he is an undoubted favourite. The officers were as follows :—Judge, Mr J. Knight; clerk of scales, Mr C. W. Arnold ; clerk of course, Mr C. Hunter ; secretary, Mr C. C. Buckland. They all carried out their duties in an exemplary manner, and gave the utmost satisfaction. Unfortunately the attendance of the public was not an great as usual. This we think was due so the fact that few outsiders were taking part in the competitions, but we trust another year will see an alteration in this. Tlie following is a lLt of the events:—
Bending Competition.—N. Binks' Kerry, 1 ; R. Hannoo's Banjo, 2 ; Innis Taylor's Vanity, 3. I. Taylor's Target, V. Chitty's Temaiti, Mason's Napinapi, R. F. Seddon'a Mahuta, N. Bank's Bumper, and J. Allen's Donkey, also competed. The vet-rau Kerry woo after a touuh struggle. Ho is indeed a wonder, and we should think he holds the record for polo e.veuts in the colony. He is particularly food at turning and twisting round the poles in bending competitions, which gives him great advantages over some of his younger cempetitorn. Hr'RVLE Race, one mile, over four hurdles.—J. C. Pelts' Colleen, 12 0 (Mcßae) 1 ; W. Kay's Maungawhara, 11.7 (C. Selby) 2 ; W. Douglas' Gold Fish, 12.7 (owner) 3. Colleen won easily. Polo Ball Race.—N. Banks 1, R. Hannon 2, W. Douglas 3. The other triers were : I. Taylor, A. BurnMurdock, J. White, F. R.Seddon, and C. C. Buckland. Banks and Hannon had -i gr>'at ' go' in the final beat. The former broke his club, and Hannon hit the ball through the goal posts the first time round, which put him at a great disadvantage, but notwithstanding this he was very close up at the finish. Polo Cop, four furlongs.—lnnis Taylor's Gaietv, 12st (C. Selby), 1 ; C. Potts' Colleen, 12st (W. Douglas), 2 ; N Banks' Maungawhara, list 71b (O. Buckland) 3. The only other starter was N. Banks' Waimarei. Gaiety jumped away into the van at oace, where Selby kept him, and he won by about ten lengths. Tandkm Race—N. Banks' Goldfish and Kerry, 1 ; J. Allen's Scratchit and Mule, •2 ; li. Haooon's Banjo ami Tupaki. 3. V. Chitty's puir, King Cole aud Temaiti, also tried. All the horses were manipulated by their owners. Banks and Allen got best away and were virtually the only ones in it, bar accidents, which, however, did not happen, and Banks won easily. Ladies' Bracelet. Miss Hill's Vanity (Innis Taylor), I ; Miss MoCaw's Molly (N. Banks), 2. The other starters were Miss Douglas' .Little Nell, Miss Hill's Target, Miss Kay's Kerry, Miss Banks' Bumper and Miss Allen's Donkey. Much interest was taken in this event and the win was a popular one. Innis Taylor was very smart in getting away, which won him the race. Nightshirt Race—N. Banks 1, Innis Taylor 2. J. Allen and J. Graham also competed. In this race the competitors had to run fifty yards, clothe themselves in a nightshirt, lead their horses fifty yards, saddle up, mount, ride round a post and home again. This event caused lots of fun, and tho efforts to get into tbe nightshirts quickly were greeted with screams of laughter. Banks and Taylor had a great go up the straight. Consolation Race— W. Kay's Maungakawa (J. Banks), 1 ; R. Hannou's Banjo (Owner), 2. W. Douglas' Gold Fish and I. Taylor's Target also ran. Banks and Hannon had all the best of this, but the feather-weight of the rider of Mnungakawa just about gained him the victory.
