SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS. PIRINOA. (“The Age” Special.) President Wood, head of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints in New Zealand, wan a visitor to thia district for the district conierence. He was acompanied by his daughter. Elder Robinson, who has been on missionary work among the Maoris in Wairarapa and Manawatu districts for the past two years, will leave for his home in Salt Lake City early thia month. He was tendered a farewell social in the meeting house at Kohunui last Monday evening. Mr. Arapata Piripi, on behalf of the Maori community, presented the departing guest with a travelling rug. Elder Robinson was also tendered a farewell social at Gladstone* The funeral of the late Mr. Henare (Harry) Te Whaiti, eldest son of Mrs Te Whaiti, Greytowu, and the late Iraia Te Whaiti, which was largely attended, took place.on Saturday, the interment being at a the family’s private cemetery at Banana, Pirinoa. A dance and euchre party under the auspices of the Kahutara branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Kahutara Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance. The Monte Carlo competition was won by Mr. and Mrs Primer. The music for the dance vas supplied by the Lower Valley Dance Band. Mr. and Mrir Chas. Hodder, who have been on a motor tour of the North Island, returuedi home last week.

A large slip.on the Palliser Bay road has completely blocked the road. It will be sometime before the road ia cleared for vehicular traffic. The weather, has continued boisterous for the part week and the conditions are very wintery. Owings to streams overflowing their banks some parts of. the main road were flooded and several; motorists experienced difficulty in ..negotiating the flooded; area. A heavy fall of snow was experienced on Friday, evening with the result that the surrounding hills are well covered. Early lambs will, it is feared* suffer severely..

The winner of the Campbell Cup played by the men of the Piriaoa Golf dub wm D. Tikao, with H,' Walker second. On Saturday, July 25, a considerablenumber of Maori and Paheka members, of the dtarch of Jesus ChriM-and Latter Day Saints, assembled at Kohunui Pa, near Pirinoa, for the Parish conference- in connection with the aboveChurch. Among those present were the preaident and the secretary of the Mission, who travelled from Auckland specially for the occasion, also Mr. Takana, president of Relief Society, of-the Church in New Zealand. The function opened on Saturday evening by the members of tha primary division rendering many delightful items, inc hiding a dialogue, recitations end duets. The Mutual Association also contributed a few items. On Sunday there were the usual ehurch services, many visitors from other parts of the country being present. A most sucoeMfnl conference was brought to a elose in the evening, when the ladies of the Relief Society organised a saertd concert, which included a religious pageant, members of which delivered omt10ns in costumes, violin solos and other items. During the evening a most impressive address was delivered by the president of the- mission. A plain and fancy dress ball is to. be held in the Memorial Hall on Thurs-W day next. Arrangements are well forward and indications point to a most successful function. A first -i—--orchestra has been engaged.
