HARRIER ACTIVITIES.
HASTINGS BEAT MASTERTON I CLUB. KEATS TROPHY CONTEST. The annual race between the Masterton Harrier flub and the Hastings Harrier Club for the L. A. Keats . trophy took place at Hastings on Saturday when Hastings won by a margin of 26 points. The course was a two lap one of 6} miles. Thirty-five runners faced the starter. C. Talbot (M.)l went into the lead followed closely by C. Wright (H.) and T. Taylor (H.J. After about 2 miles Talbot had a lead of 5 yards on Wright and Taylor, while A. Hunt (H.) had moved up to join them. About 50 yards behind came J., Mulvey (M.) followed closely by A. Robertson (H.j, B. Anderson (H.) and Marshall (H.). Coming round the racecourse for the start of the second lap Talbot was leading Wright, Taylor and Hunt by 10 yards with Robertson, Anderson and Marshall about 50 yards behind. Masterton’s next man, Mulvey, was about 40 yards behind this bunch and was closely followed by Kempton and Shaw with Hatch about 75 yards behind. At the finish Taylor and Talbot raced down the straight and Talbot forged ahead to win by about 3 yards. The following were the placings of the two teams:—Masterton: C. Talbot, 36.40, 1; J. Mulvey, 38.56, 8; G. Kempton, 40.35, 11; R. Shaw, 40.50, 12; S. Hatch, 41.45, 14; points, 46. Hastings: T. Taylor, 36.41, 2; C. Wright, 37.30, 3; A. Hunt, 37.36, 4; B. Anderson and H. Marshall, 38.35, 5; points, 20. The winner of the sealed handicap for Masterton was J. Mulvey (2min. 30 secs.) 36min. 35secs., with C. Talbot (scr.) 36.40 second.
After the race afternoon tea was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall when Mr. D. Shaw, patron of the Hastings Club, extended a welcome to the visitors. Mr. A. M. Robertson, president, congratulated the team on winning the trophy and also C. Talbot for his fine run. He then presented C. Talbot with the Keats Button for fastest time. Mr. C. Talbot thanked the Hastings Club for the excellent way in which the visitors were entertained and the spirit in which the race was run. He also congratulated Hastings on their win. In the evening an enjoyable dance was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, the visitors being the guests of the evening. On Sunday morning both clubs journeyed to Napier where they joined with the Wanganui and Napier Clubs for morning tea. The four club captains gave short speeches and the visitors were taken for a trip round the town. The visitors returned home in the afternoon.
EVENT FOR JUNIOR MEMBERS. The junior members of the Masterton Harrier Club held a 3 mile open handicap on Saturday, J. Millward (scr.) again showing himself the best junior. Giving the limit men 3 minutes, he soon overhauled the field, and on reaching Te Ore Ore Road, had a substantial lead from A. Sonnex. The results were:—J. Millward (scr.), 1; A. Sunnex (3min.), 2; A. Innes (30 secs.), 3; P. Blake (3min.), 4. KIATERE CLUB. TRAINING RUN ON SATURDAY. On Saturday the Kiatere Harrier Club held a friendly training run of about six miles over a one lap course which included about thirty fences. The first three men to finish were W. McDonald, A. McDonald and W. Burgess. The junior members had a training run of about two and a half miles.
