ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

AUSTRALIANS BEAT WANGANUI. VISITORS HAVE EASY WIN. WANGANUI, July 25. The touring Australian Soccer eleven defeated Wanganui to-day, 9/1. The combination, pace and positional play of the visitors was too much for the home team and it was obvious shortly after the match commenced that the Australians would run up a substantial score. Wanganui’s play was patchy. Mackie, the home team’s outside right, played a sound game but the honours of the day so far as Wanganui were concerned really rested with Whiting, the home side’s youngest player, who played left half. Smith, Australia’s centre forward, scored five of the nine goals, heading them all into the net. Smith scored three in the first half and McNab and White one each, McNab goaling from a penalty. Smith scored again in the second half, also McNab and Osborne. Mackie scored Wanganui’s only goal.—(P.A.)
