SETTLERS FAREWELLED.

MR. AND MRS. HAROLD BENNETT There was a very large attendance, representative of the whole of the Tinui and East Coast district, at a gathering held in the Tinui Hall last week to farewell Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bennett, who are taking up their residence in Lansdowne. Mr. L. D. Cameron presided and a parting gift, a handsome silver tea service, was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, on behalf of the settlers of the district, by Mr. Hugh Morrison, Provincial President of the Farmers’ Union. It was emphasised by Mr. Morrison and other speakers that in Mr. and Mrs. Bennett the district was losing settlers who were valued and held in the highest respect. References were made to the excellent service Mr. Bennett had rendered on the Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, the Castlepoint County Council, friendly societies and other organisations, and to the helpful part Mrs. Bennett had taken in the community affairs of the district. Amongst those present were many representatives of district sports bodies and gratitude was expressed to Mr. Bennett for the generosity with which he had made his property available for sports gatherings and on other occasions. Keen regret was expressed at the loss of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett after a residence in the district extending over some 26 years and they were assured that they took with them all good wishes for their future happiness and prosperity. The farewell proceedings were followed by an enjoyable dance.

Members of the Tinui Women’s Institute, of which Mrs. Bennett was a valued member, farewelled her and made her a presentation.
