GRAVE OUTLOOK.
ALL PALESTINE CHALLENGED BY ARAB TERRORISM. REINFORCEMENTS DISPATCHED' FROM EGYPT. BLAZE OF LAWLESSNESS. (Received' Wednesday, 10.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 27. More British troops, are reported to be leaving Egypt to-day for Palestine, where the situation is described as graver than at any time since the crisis began. The “News-Chronicle’s”. Jerusalem correspondent reports that the whole of Palestine is now challenged by Arab terrorism. Hardly an hour passes without violence, arson or shooting attacks on the police and troops. The Arabs are becoming bolder, especially in Northern Palestine, where individual ambushings are assuming almost the character of risings. Motor convoys are attacked despite armed escorts. The Nablus-Haifa Road is reported to have been mined. British women and children from the Nablus area have been brought to Jerusalem, from which scores of Jewish families are fleeing. .British officials at Jaffa have established their headquarters in the neighbouring tow® of Tel Aviv, after sending their families to Haifa in a warship. The police used Lewis guns on Arab barricades at Jaffa.
FLAMES FANNED. BY ITALIAN PROPAGANDA ' / IN NEAR EAST. CONCERN FELT BY BRITISH AUTHORITIES. CAIRO, May 26. Italian propaganda, which is undoubtedly fanning the flames of terrorism in Palestine, is increasing elsewhere in the Near East, especially in Egypt, where the success of the Abysffifiian campaign has encouraged large sections of the public to fear that Italy’s might is overshadowing Britain’s. The ruthless use of poison gas occasioned widespread apprehension lest Egypt might be involved in a straggle with so ruthless an adversary. The Italian community, which is the second largest foreign colony in Egypt, have little difficulty in spreading Fascist propaganda. The British authorities are gravely concerned, and realise that the Situation demands the greatest dexterity. The Italian Foreign Office is expected to renew its efforts to persuade Egypt to sign a treaty of nop-aggression with the object of dividing Egyptian opinion by suggesting that if Italy guarantees the territorial integrity Of Egypt there will be no necessity for Egypt to concede the British military demands. It is stated, however, that Egyptian politicians dp . not trust Italian good faith. The Italian arguments nevertheless pre unsettling the public, as is the case in Palestine.
